Lōkahi Harmony

The Hawaiian word Lōkahi embraces harmony of health. Lōkahi is the very essence of advocating healing, of restoration to unity, of renewal. And so much more.

When it comes to health and wellness in Hawai‘i, there is a special healthcare cluster across the islands dedicated wholly to local traditional healing harmony: Papa Ola Lōkahi.

From the cleansing saltwater of the Pacific to wisdom of kūpuna elders and locally fresh grown foods, the Papa Ola Lōkahi group network of clinics across the islands feature facets of traditional wellness from the earth, sea and culture. The Papa Ola Lōkahi group essentially empowers elders, known as kūpuna, for healing and restoring Lōkahi.

Linked with partners in health and wellness communities across the islands, their primary philosophy, “seeks the knowledge of the source of illness which lies within our ancestral past and environment. The wisdom of this knowledge understands that healing and wellness embraces the principles and protocols of our Native Hawaiian cultural and healing practices, and compels respect for our kūpuna.”

For example, within their network, the Ho’ola Lahui Hawai’i Kaua’i Community Health Center features health clinics, a pharmacy, and fitness center. Ke Ola Mamo on O’ahu focuses on increased healthcare access, breast and cervical cancer prevention, diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, nutrition and fitness. Since 1991, Hui Mālama Ola Nā ‘Ōiwi on the Big Island has specialized in family medicine.

The best news is that Papa Ola Lōkahi is part of growing a movement of Traditional Hawaiian Health small clinics across the islands—which means Lōkahi is being restored step by step, and breath by breath.
